Kings and Castles

This is a painting from the fourteenth century, I feel like I could just walk into it. I like the
whole castles, knights and kings theme.

  1. The colors are in muted tones. They make me feel peaceful and soothed.

The wondering pathways make me want to explore and find adventure. The shrubbery lining the pathways make the paths seem more exciting, almost like it is calling me.

The colors the king is wearing are not very royal colors. They feel more like he might be a poorer king. He looks like he is deep in thought as he looks off into the distance.

The way the king is placed it feels like he is blocking the way of anyone who would harm his people.

  2. I am not really a fan of how the king is place in the bottom corner and looking out of the composition. But you have a very valid point as to why he may be placed there. This piece reminds me of the central panel in the Nuremberg Chronicle that we looked at in class. It uses the same pastel colors and the landscape is set up in the same way stylistically.

  3. I feel as if this is a cropped portion of the actual piece which it is not. I guess it is the king and how he faces the edge of the plane rather than the center. Additionally, since his eyes are shown I want the page to continue to the right with more hills, roads, and details and a focus to what the king could be looking at.
